Scopes of chemical engineering

Chemical engineering if pursued sincerely is highly profitable and the scope in India is huge. We are the top paid when compared with the pass outs of other branches and lately there has been a boom in this field and placements are sure. But first you should know what chemical engineering is because students have a misconception about it. A common fear that the work conditions of chemical engineers are hazardous is a fluke. Chemical engineers work in safe environment and direct contact with chemicals is minimum. Chemical engineers in India recruited in many sectors. Some being : petroleum and petrochemicals, paper, fertilizers, rubber, pharmaceuticals, organic and inorganic industries etc. Petroleum and the pharmaceutical sectors are booming and quite in demand.

Some of the major companies are listed below :

In petroleum and gases
Reliance industries
Essar oils
Gujarat oils
ONGC
BPCL
Fertilizers
Indo Gulf fertilizers
Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore Ltd
Coromandel fertilizers
Some other companies being :
Bengal Chemical and Pharmaceuticals
Orissa Drugs and Chemical Ltd
Indian Drugs and Pharmaceutical Ltd (IDPL)
Bihar Drugs and Organic Chemical Ltd
Naramada colours pvt ltd
Honeywell
Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Ltd
Aditya Birla Chemicals
Arati Industries Ltd

Job prospects:

Chemical engineers are expected to have employment growth of 8 percent over the projections decade, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Although overall employment in the chemical manufacturing industry is expected to decline, chemical companies will continue to research and develop new chemicals and more efficient processes to increase output of existing chemicals.
Among manufacturing industries, pharmaceuticals may provide the best opportunities for job seekers. However, most employment growth for chemical engineers will be in service-providing industries such as professional, scientific, and technical services, particularly for research in energy and the developing fields of biotechnology and nanotechnology.

 OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHEMICAL ENGINEERS:

The work of a chemical engineer involves construction, design, operation, installation, and maintenance of plants; manufacturing chemical products; supervision of chemical plants; gauging problems; extracting chemicals; developing processes; and many more things.

There are many opportunities for a chemical engineer, either in India or abroad. Jobs are available in public as well as government sectors. Chemical engineers get lucrative employment opportunities in large companies that manufacture food, fertilizer, specialty chemicals, paints, pesticides, plastics, polymers, pharmaceuticals, etc. One can also take up teaching as a career or go for research in other branches like atomic power plants and defense establishments

It is projected that the period through 2012 will be a slow moving time for chemical engineers. But although the total employment in chemical manufacturing concerns is likely to decrease, R&D activities as well as developing more efficient output from existing chemical processes are expected to be carried on by chemical companies. In the manufacturing sector, pharmaceuticals are likely to have the best growth opportunities for employees. Most of the chemical engineers, however, will be employed in the non-manufacturing industry, primarily, the research and testing services industry. Though no new job opportunities are expected to grow out of these sectors, openings will be available due to retirements and transfers of current employees.
